Windows Mobile 6, formerly codenamed Crossbow, is the latest version of Windows Mobile platform and has been released on February 12, 2007 at the 3GSM World Congress 2007. It comes in three different versions:
The most confusing part…but def. needs a clarity when we talk about devices and software running on it.
Windows Mobile 6 Standard = Smartphones
(phones without touchscreens)
Windows Mobile 6 Professional = PDAs with phone functionality
(Pocket PC Phone Edition)
Windows Mobile 6 Classic = Plain PDAs
Windows Mobile 6 is powered by Windows CE 5.0 (version 5.2) and is strongly linked to Windows Live and Exchange 2007 products. Please note, it is not WinCE 6.0, but still Microsoft termed as WM 6 !!! just to confuse all
Technically the OS version # in WM6 is 5.02; it’s an advancement of the OS (5.01) that was in WM5. Certain CE6 OS features have been ported to WM6. But the kernel VM architecture we’ve been discussing here does NOT apply to Windows Mobile 6.
Microsoft is working on Photon – next version of Windows Mobile and will be powered by Windows Embedded CE 6.0. Photon seems to be merging the Smartphone and Pocket PC versions in one unified Windows Mobile Version & scheduled for release in the first half of 2008.
