Windows Mobile 6 … & its future July 5, 2007

Filed under: Windows Mobile — parthasarathy @ 7:44 am

Windows Mobile 6, formerly codenamed Crossbow, is the latest version of Windows Mobile platform and has been released on February 12, 2007 at the 3GSM World Congress 2007. It comes in three different versions:

The most confusing part…but def. needs a clarity when we talk about devices and software running on it.

Windows Mobile 6 Standard = Smartphones
(phones without touchscreens)

Windows Mobile 6 Professional = PDAs with phone functionality
(Pocket PC Phone Edition)

Windows Mobile 6 Classic = Plain PDAs

Windows Mobile 6 is powered by Windows CE 5.0 (version 5.2) and is strongly linked to Windows Live and Exchange 2007 products. Please note, it is not WinCE 6.0, but still Microsoft termed as WM 6 !!! just to confuse all :-(

Technically the OS version # in WM6 is 5.02; it’s an advancement of the OS (5.01) that was in WM5. Certain CE6 OS features have been ported to WM6. But the kernel VM architecture we’ve been discussing here does NOT apply to Windows Mobile 6.

Microsoft is working on Photon – next version of Windows Mobile and will be powered by Windows Embedded CE 6.0. Photon seems to be merging the Smartphone and Pocket PC versions in one unified Windows Mobile Version & scheduled for release in the first half of 2008.

Giving WM applications demo?…Show PDA on screen July 4, 2007

Filed under: Windows Mobile — parthasarathy @ 10:14 pm

If you are one of those who uses your Pocket PC or Windows Mobile device to show a presentation or demo products to your clients, then following are some wonderful tools you should have.

1. Microsoft Remote Display Control
This is a free tool from Microsoft. A basic tool for this purpose. May not have a PC command initiation for connecting PDA, user have to click CONNECT from PDA. Also it doesn’t support cool skins and reset options. But overall this is a good one to have for those who don’t want to invest on such a tool.

2. SOTI Pocket Controller
Best for this purposes, it has lot of cool skins, so you can make a PDA feel when you show it on screen. Lot of options, you can capture a screen, create demo videos, reset PDA from PC etc. Overall a GREAT tool to have if you are a business user and use PDA for demo your products.

Secret: Even Microsoft Windows Mobile team is using SOTI!!! Can you believe? Yes, I was there to MEDC 2007 and most of the speakers from Microsoft were using SOTI for their demos during presentations !!! not using their own tool !! :-)

3. Direct cable connection to projector
This is a hardware solution to the problem. You can get a cable which connects your PDA and the projector and start sending the output to the projector. The only drawback is, you can only use PDA without PC. But with PDAs supporting Mobile Office – power points, this is also a good option.

So for me…the winner is SOTI Pocket Controller.
